Assessment 2: Mock Interviews! (2 Weeks)

Image
Assalamualaikum readers! After we're done with all the resumes and cover letters, we proceed to the second assessment, which is mock interviews. This assessment was created to prepare students for the real job interviews that they would soon go through during their job-seeking process after graduating from IKM. This topic was allocated two weeks, where the first week was for preparation, while the second week was for carrying out the assessment.  The way the mock interview was carried is as follows; teachers exchange classes, meaning that we are not interviewing our own students but instead become panels for other classes. Then, marks are given by the panels, before it is reviewed by the class teacher to ensure fairness for all students.  For your information, I was assigned to become the panel of my ex-students, who I taught last semester. What amused me was that these students actually requested that I DID NOT become their interviewer because they said that "Madam Nadia a

Assessment 4: Roleplaying (2 Weeks)

Image
Assalamualaikum all.. This post will be a summary of 2-week's worth of class since all we have been doing during this time was preparing for the role play assessment, and then acting it out in front of the class.  For this assessment, students are asked to be in pairs and each pair is given a scenario that they have to play out. The main objective of this assessment is to see students applying basic communication skills while conversing, such as greeting one another, saying sorry/ thank you, and also asking WH questions. Sadly, this assessment had to be repeated, because students failed to do their roleplay properly the first time around. For roleplays, students are supposed to be memorizing the script and then act it out. To make the task easier for students, I allowed them to submit a video of their actions, rather than make them roleplay live during class. By doing this, I thought that students will be able to edit their video better, and could read the scripts off camera, befo

Assessment 3: Presentations, here we come! (2 Weeks)

Image
Assalamualaikum again everyone! This week, we're moving on to the most common assessment for language classes; Presentations!   So, based on my observation for the past 2 weeks, here are my SWOT result analysis for how my classes are carried out; STRENGTH: Compared to KPM which is very packed with content, where each week consists of different topics and there is a strict timeline for assessment submissions, IKM is much more relaxed in the sense that it allows leeway for students by allocating extra time for students to learn a certain topic. To make you understand better, during my teaching years in KPM, there were 10 topics that we had to finish within the duration of 12 weeks. Meanwhile, in IKM, there are only 3 topics to teach, and we are expected to finish them within 22 weeks. The reason behind this is that teaching English in IKM means that we have to start from the basics. If we're teaching about ways to present, we have to start with exploring the skills of speaking be

Assessment 1: Preparing Resumes and Cover Letters (2 Weeks)

Image
Assalamualaikum everyone!   For the past 2 weeks, we went through the first assessment, which is the preparation of legal documents for interviews; a cover letter, and a resume. There's a reason why it took me 2 weeks to cover this topic, you'll see why later. For the Diploma students, their task is a tad bit harder because they have to prepare a resume video in addition to the written (typed) cover letter and resume. For this task, students have to promote themselves to future employees by highlighting their skills and specialties in an introduction video called video resume. It is basically a resume, but in video form, which means that students have to know what parts of their resume they would like to highlight and present to wow headhunters. Here is a summary  of the SWOT analysis I had done based on the lessons these past 2 weeks: STRENGTH: Due to the low level of English comprehension of the Certification students, the modules were prepared with samples and templates for

Week 4: Welcoming the New Students

Image
Assalamualaikum everyone! This week, our college is officially welcoming new semester 1 students to IKM KL, and this week will be my first time meeting them. According to my schedule, half of my teaching time will be focused on semester 1 students, while the rest of my schedule is divided equally for the senior classes. Since semester 1 students are still new, for the whole week, they seemed to be quite eager when they entered the classroom. Everyone arrived on time and was participative during the ice-breaking session. During this part of the lesson, I actually implemented the first unit of the course into the ice-breaking session with the first part of the course content, which was actually focused on the same thing: Self-introduction.  STRENGTH:  Since I have been teaching technical students for the past few weeks, it gave me a bit of an idea of how to conduct the junior classes. I was also able to anticipate a variety of behaviors coming from each course based on the senior class

Week 3: Starting with the Lessons

Image
Assalamualaikum everyone! Last week has been the introduction week, where I first get to know students from each course and share with them what topics will be covered throughout the semester. This week, the actual lessons begin and the results of the SWOT analysis I had done based on the classes this week are as follows: STRENGTH: The topics that I will be teaching for the courses in IKM are quite similar to what I taught during my years in KPM even though the courses here are different. Thus, having the experience teaching these topics is definitely helpful since I have already determined the suitable activities that could be carried out during the lesson, and all I have to do now is to try and adapt the activities to my current students' level of competency and comprehension. WEAKNESS: I am afraid that my teaching style is not suiting the students' tastes. Students seem to be less enthusiastic as soon as they are asked to open their course modules. The drop in energy can CL

Week 2: The New Semester Starts!

Image
Assalamualaikum and good morning everyone!       This week, the new semester has finally started, and on Monday, I was actually nervous and excited at the same time because I finally have my own students (instead of being a substitute teacher for random classes) and can start my official journey of teaching in IKM KL. So, here's a recap on what happened this week according to my SWOT analysis: STRENGTH: I have previous teaching experience, where I taught students both in face-to-face and online classes, thus giving me a sense of what makes students more interested in learning, such as through the usage of videos and mobile apps during class. Having a 2-year teaching experience has enabled me to try and error teaching methods and learning activities, making me now much more prepared than when I first started teaching. WEAKNESS: Being someone who has previously taught in KPM, a college for diploma students, I believe that my main weakness is that I have this pre-existing expectation
